Hurray! Looking back on what we’ve accomplished, overcome, grown through, let go of, stepped into, or survived is so important. I say this as a person who has a hard time looking back and is always looking ahead at the next thing, then the next thing, and then the next thing. But honoring how far we’ve come has such value in how we move forward. Celebrating the hurrays and even acknowledging the “what the heys” helps us gain earned confidence and even gratitude and compassion for ourselves.
To support you, I’m sharing a special resource I created years ago for a group coaching program. It was one of the most popular tools in the group and now I’m sharing it with you.
This 12 month year review worksheet is yours to use at any time to look back on the past and ask yourself: what did the past 12 months teach me? How did I grow? What am I ready to leave behind and what do I want to bring with me into the future?
Reviewing the Last 12 Months Exercise
Worksheet: The PDF worksheet below is printable so you can print it out right on your computer, or follow the prompts in your own journal.
Time: I highly suggest giving yourself at least 1 hour (and up to 3) to walk through the past 12 months. And remember, you don’t have to wait for a calendar year to do it. And even if you did it a few months or even just 1 week ago, you can do it again! The pages are broken into 4 months at a time, so it may be useful to check in every four months! When we look back with fresh eyes, new information tends to arise.
If you want to accomplish this in 1 hour, I suggest spending just three minutes reflecting on each month. I know! That seems so fast! But when you set a timer you really learn to hunt for the things that were the most significant or noteworthy. For each page it will look like this:
About 45 min per page for pages 1-3
- 3 min per month. There are 4 on each page, so 12 minutes total
- 3 min choosing the overarching themes or hurrays from the 4 months on each page
About 15 minutes on pages 4-7:
- 5 minutes deciding what to “toss” or let go on page 4
- 5 minutes deciding what to “keep” and bring with you on page 5
- 5 minutes writing out your reflections on pages 6-7
Set up: Work through this in a private, quiet area. It’s also fun to set the scene and put on reflective or atmospheric music as you work through this.
Please have your planner or calendar handy, or a list of events, milestones, or activities from throughout the year. Some people like to use their photo album on their phone, or social media to remember the past 12 months. Be careful not to get sucked into posting or scrolling – really intentionally reflect on the events and how you grew.
Make it sacred! Light a candle or say a prayer and let yourself make this time special!
Important reminder: Let go of judgment as you reflect back. Instead of seeing things as good or bad, or a success or failure, ask yourself how you grew and what you learned. Call in your form of guidance and stand on your faith to be with you and guide you. Let the months reveal to you what they want you to know. Trust that whatever is coming up is doing so for your highest good – and the highest good of all involved. A guiding question for you: how did this year happen for me, not to me?
Optional: Use the back of the pages, a journal, or even a document on your computer to take additional notes if you like!
Ok ready? Let’s go!
