And as a bra fitter and Undergarment Educator since 2005, I’m always suggesting the best slip shorts, shaping shorts, and undershorts to wear under dresses. There are so many great reasons to buy & try these shorts, so I’m sharing my best tips and shopping list below.

Why Undershorts are a Must-Have in Your Wardrobe

Prevent Thigh Chafing with Comfortable Undershorts

If you’re like me, walking around causes your thighs to kiss – or aggressively makeout! This constant friction can cause chafing, irritation, and pain. I know from first hand experience. Having lived in New York City for years, and traveled to other pedestrian cities, I specifically wear and pack undershorts for any dress or skirt. Otherwise, I’m in for a world of hurt. The shorts materials between the thighs allows my thighs to glide past each other, and rub against one another without chafing. Hurray!

Stay Confident and Covered With Undershorts

While some folks love undershorts to keep their thighs from chaffing, others prefer them for coverage. I have absolutely been the victim of a strong wind on a day where I was wearing a flowy-skirted dress. Up went my skirt, and everyone saw everything. Undershorts will keep you covered! In addition, slip shorts are a great slip alternative, offering modesty through sheer outfits. And unlike a traditional slip skirt, they can even be worn under sheer pants! I even love the idea of wearing a fun pair of undershorts under a very short skirt, and letting the bottom peek out as part of the outfit. Now you’re covered and fashionable!

While slip shorts do not have to have firm, sculpting, or figure enhancing elements. They sure can! Several shapewear pieces come as shorts because the smooth line it creates is loved by wearers. Below are a few of the best shaping shorts!

Tips for Picking the Ideal Inseam for Your Undershorts

Slip shorts and undershorts come with various inseams, from super short to very long – even more capri length to the knee. You’ll want to pick your inseam based on your needs. 

If thigh chaffing is an issue, make sure the short goes at least just past where you experience the rub. 

If your thighs are curvy and your undershorts tend to roll up, try a longer length so that the end of the short isn’t stopping at your curviest part. You want the edge of the leg to go long enough to stay put. 

Keep in mind, inseams on undershorts can vary from 1” to 9” or even longer. Typically, 4-5” is shorter, 6-7” is moderate, and anything over 8” is considered longer. It’s all relative to your body!

Longer Inseam Undershorts 

A longer inseam on your underwear offers more coverage, and can be great for those who need thigh chaffing help. Personally, I was once told I have “long femurs” (the thigh bone) by a personal trainer. I knew I had long legs, I just didn’t realize which part was so long! That said, my thighs are long and the shorter inseams do nothing to protect my thighs from rubbing. These longer options are perfect for my long legs.

Shorter Inseam Undershorts

The shorter inseam makes these ideal for wearing under a mini dress, without the leg showing. They’re also great for petite folks, or those with shorter legs. While the shorter inseam may be too short for some people’s thigh chaffing, it’s a great solution for those who like the coverage or modesty, or just like the fit.

Colorful and Fashionable Undershorts 

When it comes to undershorts, their typically considered underwear. And while underwear can vary in fashion, it’s implied that they’re meant to be more function over fashion, and the more invisible or not noticeable, the better. That said, some undershorts are made to be seen! Or at least enjoyed by you. Try a fun color that coordinates with your outfit. This is especially useful if you’re wearing shorts or a skirt that are too short for your comfort. Let a pretty lace pair peek out. Get creative and say hurray! 

I just bought the funky pair with an 8” inseam to wear to an 80s workout class on an upcoming cruise, but I want to wear them under some shorter or sheer dresses, too! Tip: If you’re wearing undershorts under a sheer outfit, opt for an opaque version so they’re not see through, too. 

Cooling and Breathable Slip Shorts for Hot Days

Wearing shorts under a skirt works great to keep sweaty thighs from rubbing together. But undershorts can also cause more sweat! The styles below are designed with cool, breathable materials so your legs can sashay without sitting all day. Hurray! 

Shaping Slip Shorts 

While slip shorts offer coverage, some undershorts offer shaping. These are popular for those who want some extra sculpting, or figure creating support. Shapewear bottoms come in many styles, and shorts are popular because of the seamless look and lack of lines or digging seams from the tummy to the thigh. Look for shorts that target or enhance your chosen area, like panels in the tummy, or thigh smoothing material. 

It’s common to wear styles for a special occasion or specific outfit, while others prefer this as an everyday option. In the end, it should feel comfortable enough to wear for a long period of time. If your shapewear is too confining, or causing damage, size up or find a different option. Comfort is important!
